Singapore Telcos In Race For Exclusive Rights To Apple iPhone

The Business Times reported that the major telcos - SingTel, StarHub and M1 - are jostling for exclusive rights to sell Apple's iPhone, expected to launch in 2008. The article noted that the outcome of the negotiations is significant given that the IDA will be implementing true number portability in the second quarter of 2008 which allows consumers to easily retain their mobile numbers when switching operators. Although IDA has sanctioned such exclusive deals, the winning telco will be required to sell the iPhone in an 'unlocked' state as the IDA sees SIM-locking as a barrier to mobile competition.
